Eating out safely
3 min read
You can enjoy restaurants in pregnancy. A few habits make it easy: choose busy places where food is cooked to order, ask how a dish is made, and order hot food that arrives steaming rather than lukewarm.
Ask for meat to be cooked through, skip raw fish and shellfish, and ask whether dressings, sauces and desserts contain raw egg. Ask whether cheese is pasteurized. Salad bars and buffets where food sits out are best skipped or used carefully.
Wherever you travel, choose sealed or bottled drinks if the tap water is not safe, and be careful with ice, cut fruit and street food that has been sitting out.
The Eating out section of Bumplet lists popular dishes by cuisine, with what to order, what to ask about and what to skip. Restaurants are used to these questions, so never feel awkward about asking.
