FAQ
Which foods should I avoid in pregnancy?
Health bodies advise avoiding alcohol, raw or undercooked meat, fish and eggs, unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses, pâté, high-mercury fish such as shark and swordfish, and liver. Many of these become safe when cooked until steaming hot or made with pasteurized ingredients.
How much caffeine is safe in pregnancy?
Most guidelines suggest staying under about 200 mg a day, roughly one mug of filter coffee. Tea, cola, chocolate and energy drinks count too.
How much fish can I eat while pregnant?
Aim for 2 to 3 servings of low-mercury fish a week, with at most 2 of oily fish. Keep tuna to about 2 servings a week and avoid shark, swordfish and marlin.
Is soft cheese safe in pregnancy?
Soft cheeses made from pasteurized milk, such as mozzarella, feta and cottage cheese, are fine. Mold-ripened cheeses such as brie and blue cheeses are safest when cooked until steaming hot.
